The Butler family appears in Jamaica as early as the late seventeenth century. Edward Butler married Barbary in 1693 and later married Charity in 1702, possibly Charity Douce, although this connection still requires confirmation. The Butler family seems to have formed part of a network of influential colonial families linked through marriages, land ownership and business interests. Mary Butler, before becoming Benjamin Pusey’s second wife, had first married Temple Lawes, son of Governor Sir Nicholas Lawes.
